Coronation Ceremony of Nawab of Dir, Shah Jahan
At 3:30 p.m. in Chakdara Fort, a 13-gun salute was presented to Chief Commissioner Norman Bolton. From Peshawar, the GOC (General Officer Commanding) also arrived at Chakdara Fort with the Chief Commissioner under the escort of the Levies cavalry unit. The Political Agent of Malakand Agency received the Chief Commissioner. Afterwards, the 15th Royal Gurkha Rifles presented the Guard of Honour to the Chief Commissioner. After inspecting the Guard of Honour, Chief Commissioner Norman Bolton entered the Durbar, where Political Agent of Malakand Agency, E.H. James, introduced Shah Jahan to him.
When the Secretary invited the Chief Commissioner to address the gathering from the dais, he began his speech by addressing the Durbar:
Excerpt from the Speech
“First of all, I extend my condolences on the death of the late Nawab Aurangzeb Khan, father of Nawab Shah Jahan, and express my sympathy. Continuing my speech, I state that the Government of British India has appointed Shah Jahan as the new Nawab of Dir. The first duty of Nawab Shah Jahan is to safeguard the rights of his subjects. He must put aside personal interests, win the hearts of his tribal leaders, and gain their support. I hope that the young Nawab will govern by taking his cabinet into confidence.
The Chief Commissioner also said that Nawab Shah Jahan must treat every member of his family with justice and fairness. He requested the Nawab to honor the agreement signed with his brother, Alamzeb Khan, so that both brothers may now live in peace, with the full support of the Government of India.
Chief Commissioner Norman Bolton, addressing Alamzeb Khan, expressed happiness that peace had been established between the two brothers and that they had prevented their family from becoming weak.
Turning to the tribal elders and Khans present in the Durbar, the Chief Commissioner urged them to support their new Nawab and stand by him at all times. He also emphasized avoiding mutual conflicts and living in peace and harmony.”
Afterwards, Chief Commissioner Norman Bolton placed a turban on the head of Nawab Shah Jahan of Dir and adorned him with the honorary ribbon.
Following the Chief Commissioner’s speech, Nawab Shah Jahan addressed the Durbar:
“Nawab Shah Jahan thanked the Government of India and the Chief Commissioner for bestowing upon him the turban of honor. He acknowledged that after the death of his father, Nawab Aurangzeb Khan, the situation in Dir had deteriorated badly, but he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India, particularly to the Political Agent of Malakand Agency, Colonel James, and his official team, who rescued Dir State from difficulties through their moral support.”
After this, the Durbar concluded. The Chief Commissioner, the General Officer Commanding, and Nawab Shah Jahan of Dir left the Durbar, where they were once again presented with a Guard of Honour. Following this, the Political Agent of Malakand Agency, Colonel James, hosted the guests with tea.
